Fasting. Fasting watching TV.

Karl Marx once said that religion was an addiction, making people irrational. But if he still lived now, he would revise his above standing. He would say that television is an addiction, making people not only irrational but stupid and dumb.

All TV stations in Indonesia are basically just junk menus (sitcoms, “investigative” news, infotainment a.k.a gossip, mention it). The owners sell VHS (violence, horror, sex) shows to the audience. The advertisers buy and perhaps even block some showtimes: easy money for the TV owners and high exploitation by the advertisers. The undereducated and media-illiterate audience consume what is advertised, watch the TV shows wholeheartedly taking them as granted, as the truth, as given. Very sad indeed.

Once I discussed with a media and communication critic, a critical theory follower, from Gadjah Mada University when I was starting the very first time doing a PAE research. For that above problem, his solution was simple to do: Let’s do fasting, fasting of watching TVs. Consume more readings than watchings.

  1. Well, the suggestion is good – fasting of watching TVs. Yet, does it solve the problem? I am really concerned with our TV menus too, mentioning Sinetron as one clear example. Tapi yang salah liat adalah the other way around. It’ll be going more serious and scary if we don’t do something right now. Ayo mas, suarakan “concern” kita.

  2. lately i read news that KPI would soon publish in newspapers and TVs what programmes are not worth to watch by viewers. that would be a breakthrough i suppose. put that aside, i think the government must stand above the tv owners to regulate the ownership yang sampai sekarang sengaja membiarkan perilakunya merugikan publik. tapi bagaimana lagi, presiden indonesia yang sekarang maunya cuci piring tapi nggak mau tangannya kotor.
